Internships & Masters Awards

The Kalisher Trust funds a series of legal internships designed to prepare an individual to enter the Criminal Bar by expanding their knowledge and experience, and helping them to forge professional relationships.

All our internships are fully funded, at or above the London living wage.  We offer all our interns the opportunity to be mentored by a member of the Kalisher family until they attain tenancy.

The Kalisher Trust currently offers internships in partnership with the following prestigious organisations:

Internship opportunities are competitive, and applied for via open competition.  They are advertised on this website and our twitter feed, on an annual basis.  Generally most are advertised in the Spring.

Criteria for Kalisher Internships

All applicants for internships will be judged against the Kalisher Trust’s criteria for awards. All internships are intended to encourage those intending to, or already practising at the Criminal Bar, who demonstrate “exceptional promise but modest means”. Amongst the qualities we look for in candidates are:-

  • Intellectual ability: demonstrated by academic performance, past work, activities and other experience
  • Motivation to succeed at the Criminal Bar: including steps taken to acquire the personal skills required of a Barrister, and a demonstration of the will to succeed
  • Potential as an advocate: both in oral and written skills
  • Personal qualities: including self-reliance, independence, integrity, reliability and humanity
  • Financial need: candidates may be asked to supply to the interview panel, in confidence, information demonstrating financial need.

Post graduate courses

We also sponsor Masters courses (LLMs) at several prestigious universities, which expand the depth of knowledge of our award-holders, and give them a year of further education as they work towards a place at the criminal Bar.  All our Masters awards are run in partnership with the host universities; the eligibility criteria include those set out above for our internships.
