The Kalisher Trust News and Events

The 2012 Kalisher Scholarship Trust event will be a staged reading of two Agatha Christie plays, ‘Butter in a Lordly Dish’ and ‘Personal Call’.

Those hoping to participate include Martin Shaw, Felicity Kendal, Maxine Peake, Ray Fearon, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Mark Farrelly, and will be performed thanks to the generosity of Agatha Christie’s estate and Bill Kenwright Ltd.  Set in the world of the 1950s, the plays will be fully miked and promise an evening of laughter, legal intrigue and murder mystery.

The event will be held in Middle Temple Hall, at 6.30pm on Sunday 20th May. Tickets cost £50, and are available now fromMiddleTemple(0207 427 4800).

All proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for talented students who, without the support provided by the Trust, would be unable to reach the Criminal Bar.

The Kalisher Scholarship Trust will launch a new initiative in April 2012: a tailored advocacy course aimed at young and aspiring criminal barristers.  The course, which provides intensive tuition from practising barristers as well as from trainers from Jo Ouston & Co (www.joouston.co.uk), will be held at Gray’s Inn and the Central Criminal Court.

The course will teach voice projection, body language, posture and breathing techniques, and will do so using courtroom situations all members of the criminal bar will encounter.  The course will give fledgling barristers insight into how to handle daunting scenarios, many of which they will encounter for the first time as they move through pupillage and into tenancy.

Baroness Deech with the 2011 Kalisher prizewinners

This year’s prizes were awarded by Baroness Deech at the Criminal Bar Association’s annual Kalisher Lecture, held at the Old Bailey on 25th October 2011.

The Kalisher Scholarship was awarded to Sophie Wood and the Cloth Fair Scholarship to Elaine Freer.

Bursaries were awarded to Anneli Robins and Merry Neal.

Bella Coates and Katie Lloyd were awarded copies of Blackstone’s Criminal Practice.
