Two Masters scholarships awarded in partnership with Wadham College & St Cross College, University of Oxford

The Trust is delighted to announce two scholarships for students completing an MSc in Criminology at Wadham College and St Cross College, both at the University of Oxford.

Exceptionally, the calibre of the applicants was such that two awards have been made this year, and we are grateful to both Wadham College and St Cross College for their generosity in funding two outstanding students, Kavya Sharma (Wadham) and Paviter Juss (St Cross).

Commenting on the awards, St Cross College has said that it is ‘delighted to partner this year with the Oxford Centre for Criminology for the 2021-2022 Kalisher Trust-St Cross College Scholarship to support an outstanding student for their Master’s course in Criminology and Criminal Justice in preparation for a career at the Criminal Bar’.  The Kalisher Trust-St Cross Scholar, Paviter Juss, said that he is ‘elated to accept the Kalisher-St. Cross scholarship for the 2021/22 academic year. The Kalisher Trust’s invaluable and pioneering work towards achieving ethnic minority representation at the Criminal Bar is second to none, and I greatly look forward to being a representative of such an organisation’.

Wadham College added that it ‘has been proud to partner with the Kalisher Trust and Oxford University’s Centre for Criminology in offering scholarships to exceptionally talented and promising young people who aspire to a career in the legal profession. Their presence here has substantially enriched the college community, and contributes to Wadham’s vision of access to excellence for all, regardless of their background’.

Kalisher Trust-Wadham Scholar, Kavya Sharma, said ‘I am honoured to be the recipient of the Kalisher-Wadham Award. The kindness of the Kalisher Trust has been overwhelming. Thank you to the University of Oxford Criminology Department and Andrew Hall QC [Kalisher Trustee] who,  even at the initial stages in the process, have been both supportive and encouraging.

I applied for the MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice to gain an academic basis on contemporary social justice issues that I have only just touched the surface of within my activism and undergraduate studies. The Award has instilled confidence in me and my ability to seek a career in achieving justice for everyone, on all echelons of society.

I feel very privileged to not only be a beneficiary of such a generous award, but most significantly, it has renewed my motivation to further my knowledge and unlock new opportunities as I begin my legal journey. I am incredibly humbled and excited for the months and years ahead as I gain a broader and deeper understanding of criminal justice before undertaking formal legal training’.
