Mini-Pupillages & Marshalling

Mini-pupillages and marshalling are both forms of work experience. During a mini-pupillage you will be shadowing a barrister whereas marshalling involves shadowing a judge.

They are invaluable both to inform the area of law you are most interested in and to demonstrate commitment to the profession when it comes to applying for pupillage. They typically last 1 week but this can vary. Sometimes a mini pupillage will be assessed but this is not always the case.

Applications for mini-pupillages and marshalling vary; however, they will often involve sending a formal application in which you are required to submit a CV and a covering letter. The Kalisher Trust cannot organise marshalling or mini-pupillages; anyone wishing to apply should do so directly (please see the guidance for links). Marshalling and mini-pupillages provide several benefits, including insight into the day-to-day life of a barrister or judge; insight into different areas of the Law; and of course allowing aspiring barristers to build up a network of barristers and judges they know, and can seek advice from, as well as building up clear evidence of commitment to the Bar on their CV.

Mini-pupillages and marshalling are almost always for those aged 18 and over; most sets of chambers now have a clear scheme for mini-pupillages with transparent application requirements (such as a covering letter and a CV) as well as clear deadlines whenever they are able to take on mini-pupils.

For more information on how to apply for a mini-pupillage, or a marshalling slot (shadowing a judge), please see this link and the PDF which can be downloaded.
