Julia Freytag: 2019 Advocacy Training Testimonial

Julia Freytag was selected to take part in the Kalisher Trust’s Advocacy Training Programme in 2019. She has written the following testimonial regarding her experience:

“Whilst working for parliament, I took an active interest in how legislation was conceived and decided to pursue a career firmly rooted in advocacy. Working for the National Centre for Domestic Violence solidified my desire to represent those who may not be able to do so themselves and I am deeply committed to a career in criminal law as there are few areas of law where a barrister’s submissions can have such a profound consequence on the inherent freedom of the individual.

Whilst undertaking the BPTC in 2019, I was selected to take part in the Kalisher Trust Advocacy course. As a professionally trained opera singer, I have experience in manipulating my voice for maximum effect and understand the importance of proper breathing techniques. However, I must honestly say that this course helped me inordinately in adapting my skills for the courtroom rather than for the stage, and I saw a vast improvement in how I delivered my submissions and how I commanded space. The training delivered was personalised, and feedback was constructive and built upon each week. This culminated in a mock trial held at the Old Bailey which I can honestly say will be one of my most cherished memories.

Taking part in the Advocacy course has also had a positive impact on my pupillage applications. I have found that several prominent chambers I interviewed at asked me about my experience and recognised how prestigious the Kalisher training is, which made me immensely proud to have taken part. I cannot recommend this programme highly enough and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who meets the criteria.”

Many thanks to Julia for providing this testimonial. The application process for the 2021 course will open in the Autumn of this year. For more information regarding our advocacy training, please click here.
