Kalisher Essay Competition 2024

We are delighted to announce the 2024 Kalisher Essay Competition, which will carry a substantial prize of £2,000. The competition is open to all pupils currently undertaking a criminal pupillage.

We invite submissions of up to 2,000 words in answer to the following question:

“The Online Safety Act 2023 is a welcome move in the battle to regulate access to and the exploitation of harmful sexual material. However, it is a step and not a leap. What do you recognise to be gaps in the regulation of such material and identify the “leap” that further law reform might achieve.”

Entries will be assessed by members of the Trust, who will select one winner.  The prize will be awarded in March or April. Please could entrants send their essays to [email protected] by 5pm on 15th March 2024, ensuring that their entry is sent as a pdf, with their name and their Chambers’ name included in the document.

As in previous competitions, the pupil’s Chambers must sponsor each entry in the sum of £100. This will go towards the work of the Kalisher Trust in transforming the lives of bright young people through the development of advocacy skills. Our two main aims are helping talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve their potential through advocacy, and helping those with the requisite ability and ambition to develop careers as barristers at the criminal Bar. At a time of considerable pressure on the criminal Bar – not least for those in the earliest stages of their careers – we know we need to do even more to support, encourage and inspire the next generation of criminal barristers.

For any queries in relation to the above please contact James Gwatkin, one the Kalisher Trust’s secretaries at [email protected]
