The Kalisher Internship at JUSTICE

JUSTICE invites applications for The Kalisher Trust internship at JUSTICE.

The Kalisher intern works with our legal team on a range of criminal justice matters. As an intern you will be an invaluable member of our team, assisting in the development of our policy lines and providing research and analysis to support arguments for or against law reform.  If we are involved in a third-party intervention during your internship, you will be undertaking comparative research and possibly drafting submissions. You will accompany us to meetings with lawmakers and NGOs, speaking engagements and events as well as court hearings. You will attend internal meetings and are expected to engage with colleagues as a member of the JUSTICE staff.

The Kalisher scholarships are intended to encourage and assist those intending to practice at the Criminal Bar who demonstrate “exceptional promise but modest means”.

Given the nature of our work, applications are sought from law graduates only. This includes people who expect to have completed a law degree or GDL or are a CILEX graduate by the time they start the internship. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in criminal law and the criminal justice system. They should have excellent written and spoken communication skills.

The Kalisher Trust internship at JUSTICE will take place over three months from October 2023 to December 2023. The JUSTICE team are currently working largely remotely. Staff members have access to office space in London; however attendance is optional. The Legal Intern will have regular video calls with their line managers, the policy team and wider JUSTICE staff. The intern will be paid an award of £6,083.25 in total.

To be considered for this internship please complete the application form and send it to [email protected]. Please mark your email with ‘KALISHER INTERNSHIP’ in the subject line.

What is it like to be a Kalisher Trust intern at JUSTICE?
Seán Binder was our Kalisher Trust intern at JUSTICE in 2022. He has since returned to working at JUSTICE as our NYU Legal Fellow and Seán has secured pupillage at Red Lion Chambers.

I joined JUSTICE as their Kalisher Trust intern just after completing my GDL. I was very new to the law and, until beginning my internship, quite intimidated by a world that had been opaque. The Kalisher Trust internship at JUSTICE didn’t just illuminate the law; it dropped me right at its centre. JUSTICE has helped to shape the country’s legal landscape for decades.

This internship led to my becoming the NYU Legal Fellow at JUSTICE. That fellowship, together with the guidance from my Kalisher Trust mentor, endowed me with the confidence to apply for – and be given – pupillage. Without the Kalisher Trust, I am not sure I would have made it this far this quickly. I recommend applying for any and all of what the Kalisher Trust offers aspiring barristers. The Trust has made the Bar more accessible to me and made me a better advocate.
