Kalisher Wadham MSc

In association with the Centre for Criminology, and Wadham College, Oxford, the Kalisher Trust provides an annual award to support a post graduate MSc degree in Criminology at this world-leading academic institution. The programme provides an opportunity to potential entrants to the Criminal Bar to broaden their knowledge and expertise, and to boost their CVs.  The successful candidate will be provided with a place at Wadham College, and awarded £6,000 by the Kalisher Trust and £3,000 by the College towards the cost of their University fees.  Additional discretionary disbursements may be available from the Centre for Criminology.  In 2021, exceptionally, two awards have been made to students at Wadham College and at St Cross College.

It is part of a range of schemes providing support to those from modest backgrounds, who might otherwise not be able to obtain this experience and additional qualification. Awards are made on academic excellence alone to those who satisfy the Kalisher criteria; namely,

  • Intellectual ability – demonstrated by academic performance, past work, activities and other experience.
  • Motivation to succeed at the Criminal Bar – including steps taken to acquire the personal skills required of a Barrister, and a demonstration of the will to succeed.
  • Potential as an advocate – both in oral and written skills.
  • Personal qualities – including self-reliance, independence, integrity, reliability and humanity.
  • Financial need – candidates will be asked to supply to the interview panel, in confidence, information demonstrating financial need.
