Birmingham University

In association with Birmingham University, the Kalisher Trust sponsor an LLM student each year. This will provide an excellent opportunity for potential entrants to the Criminal Bar to broaden their knowledge and expertise, and to boost their CVs. It is part of a range of schemes providing support to those from modest backgrounds, who might otherwise not be able to obtain this experience, and additional qualification. Awards are made on academic excellence alone to those who satisfy the Kalisher criteria; namely,

  • Intellectual ability – demonstrated by academic performance, past work, activities and other experience.
  • Motivation to succeed at the Criminal Bar – including steps taken to acquire the personal skills required of a Barrister, and a demonstration of the will to succeed.
  • Potential as an advocate – both in oral and written skills.
  • Personal qualities – including self-reliance, independence, integrity, reliability and humanity.
  • Financial need – candidates will be asked to supply to the interview panel, in confidence, information demonstrating financial need.

The successful candidate for 2019/20 is Brad Wallace.
