Debating workshops with the Kalisher Trust

Over 80 students from across the David Ross Education Trust’s (DRET) secondary academies have been learning the art of persuasion during educational workshops run by the Kalisher Trust.

Working in partnership with DRET, the Kalisher Trust is a legal charity that not only provides students with a real insight into the legal profession, but also teaches them important life skills of effective argument and logical thinking.

Jamie Fisher, Secondary Enrichment Coordinator for the David Ross Education Trust, said: “We are very lucky to have the Kalisher Trust as one of our partners. I have been extremely impressed with the way the students have taken to the sessions. Many of them came to life during the debates and that was a real delight to see.”

Through sketches and role-play the workshops are also designed to help young people pass exams, impress future employers and increase self-confidence.

Becky Shipp, a Year 10 student at Lodge Park Academy said: “I’ve really enjoyed this whole experience. It has opened my eyes to the world of debating. I think the skills I have learned along the way will be really valuable, especially when it comes to university. I’m really grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait for the final debate when our skills will really be put to the test!”

The academies involved were Malcolm Arnold Academy, Lodge Park Academy, Barnes Wallis Academy, Charles Read Academy, Skegness Grammar School, King Edward VI Academy, Havelock Academy And Humberston Academy.

Further activities will be run throughout the Spring and Summer Term, culminating in a debating competition in May.
