Skegness Grammar wins Kalisher Debating Competition

Students from across the David Ross Education Trust travelled to the University of Nottingham to take part in the Kalisher Trust Debating Finals.

After months of workshops and preparation, Malcolm Arnold Academy, Skegness Grammar School, Havelock Academy, Charles Read Academy, Lodge Park Academy, Barnes Wallis Academy, Humberston Academy and King Edward VI Academy went head to head to try and win the debating trophy. Topics up for discussion included, ‘Is the pen mightier than the sword?’ and ‘Is pop more important than classical music?’ The Rt. Hon. Lady Justice Rafferty, speaker of the judges and mentor from the Kalisher Trust, said: “It was a very difficult task to reach a decision as the standard on the day was extremely high and every student had thoroughly prepared for the final. The students ability to construct arguments and respond to questions was very impressive and this is something that will be of benefit in many aspects of adult life.”

Skegness Grammar School were crowned the overall winners and runners up of the competition. Tamanna, a student from Malcolm Arnold Academy, was awarded best individual debater.

Mrs Black, Assistant Headteacher at Skegness Grammar School, said: “The day was a huge success and we were delighted to come away with both team trophies recognising the communication skills of our students.”

Simon Northcott, Director of Enrichment at the David Ross Education Trust, commented: “A huge well done to our winners but every student who took part should feel very proud. Communication is a life skill and being able to debate to this standard will only create opportunities and open doors for these young people.”
