Malcolm Arnold Academy wins Kalisher Debating Finals

After months of practice, students from across the Trust’s secondary academies recently competed in the David Ross Education Trust Kalisher Debating Finals.

Held at the Lakeside Theatre at the University of Nottingham, the event saw teams from each academy using their impressive persuasion skills in order to take the title.

Representing their academies with pride, students argued their case on issues that affect everyday life, with Naia and Hannah from Malcolm Arnold Academy being named overall winners after opposing the motion that 16 year olds should be given the vote.

Malcolm Arnold’s success continued when Rowan was named the best individual, after his argument opposing the acceptance of performance enhancing drugs in sport.

Skegness Grammar School took second place overall, with a number of individual awards for students across the academies.

Chris Steed, Head of School at Malcolm Arnold Academy, commented: “We are incredibly proud of our students for their performance in the debating finals. Over the course of the year we have seen our students’ confidence grow immensely and it is fantastic to see how their debating skills have developed.”

Simon Northcott, Director of Enrichment for the David Ross Education Trust, added: “It was a fantastic event and the arguments were delivered with such passion and energy. Debating is an important part of life and it is clear that some of our students have very bright futures ahead of them, based on their performances.”
