Charles Read Academy excels in Kalisher Debating Finals
After months of practice, students from Charles Read Academy competed in the David Ross Education Trust’s Kalisher debating finals.
Held at the Lakeside Theatre at the University of Nottingham, the event saw teams from across the Trust’s secondary academies competing to win the title.
The eight-strong team from Charles Read Academy used their impressive persuasion skills to argue their case on issues that affect everyday life, with Ben Turner and Karrie Rogers taking home the Outstanding Potential Award. Robert Sloan, Principal at Charles Read Academy, commented: “We are incredibly proud of our students for their performance in the debating finals. Over the course of the year we have seen our students’ confidence grow immensely and it is fantastic to see how their debating skills have developed.”
Simon Northcott, Director of Enrichment for the David Ross Education Trust, said: “It was a fantastic event and the arguments were delivered with such passion and energy. Debating is an important part of life and some of our students have very bright futures ahead of them, based on their performances.”
The Kalisher Trust is a legal charity that is working in partnership with DRET to help students develop the important life skills of persuasion and public speaking. Throughout the year they give coaching sessions for both students and staff.
