Two Podcast Episodes: Martin Shaw & Max Hardy in Talking Law with Sally Penni MBE

Sally Penni MBE has recently interviewed two members of the Kalisher family for her podcast, Talking Law (from Women in the Law UK), and we are pleased to share the episodes here. Episode 55 is an interview with our Patron, the actor Martin Shaw, who reflected on his life as an actor in parts ranging from The Sweeney, to Judge John Deed and Inspector George Gently.  Martin became a supporter of the Trust’s work after appearing in London’s West End as Thomas More in A Man for all Seasons – and it was while playing this role that he met Mrs Justice (Anne) Rafferty, as she then was, who is a founding Trustee.

Martin remembers: ‘I had an image of what a High Court Judge was going to look like, and I was completely amazed when someone who had more in common with Lauren Bacall came into my dressing room…and this was Anne Rafferty.  Then she told me about Michael Kalisher and the Kalisher Trust that she had been involved in setting up.  It just went straight to my heart’.

Max Hardy is a Trustee, and talked about his work with the Trust including the opportunity to prosecute Goldilocks – as part of the Trust’s provision of educational materials for primary school children – and our educational outreach from Skegness to Tower Hamlets.  Commenting on the Trust’s work to give greater access to a career at the Bar for those from under-represented backgrounds, Max said ‘I think if you have a criminal justice system administered by people that don’t look and sound like the society they serve, it loses legitimacy…people need to feel that they are included and represented’.
